You have until 11.59pm today Tuesday November 26 to register to vote, otherwise you might lose the chance to have your say in the general election on December 12.
It takes less than five minutes to register, just log onto the official Government website with your national insurance number to hand. You can still vote if you don’t have a permanent address, just head on down to the Arnolfini today where they will help you complete the registration process and give you a free warm drink while you wait.
Meanwhile, if you’re looking to make a bit of extra cash this Christmas, have you thought about becoming a Poll Clerk for the day on December 12th?
Anyone can apply for this day job as long as you’re free from 6:30am until 10pm and are already on the electoral register. If you’re not on the electoral register – you need to be – otherwise this could seriously affect your credit rating. If you get the gig, you’ll be responsible for helping set up on the day, welcoming electors to the polling station, finding them on the Electoral Register and issuing them with ballot papers.
You can also apply for a role as a Counting Assistant, Postal Vote Opener, Canvasser and potentially a Presiding Officer. It goes without saying that you’ll have to remain politically neutral and not provide any form of assistance whatsoever to any candidates, agents, campaign groups or political parties in elections or referenda.
It’ll be a long day but well worth it if you’re looking to earn a few extra quid to help in January. Check out the Bristol City Council website for more details where you’ll also find the application form. Get your application in early as I imagine there’ll be lots of people looking to make a bit of extra cash.
