Welcome back to Broke in Bristol – the blog that helps you save money, make money and live life to the full on a shoestring. This week, my campervan is being hired which is great because it means I’m making cash while doing very little! However, it also means that I’m relying on public transport more than ever, inspiring me to write a post on cheap ways to get around Bristol.
Aside from walking and cycling, the cheapest way to get around town is usually the bus and you’ve got to prepare ahead and be digitally savvy to get the best deal – well at least enough to download the First Bus M Tickets app. I usually buy a pack of 5 single short trips in the Bristol Inner Zone for £7.50, saving me £2.50 compared to if I purchase them on the bus.
For train journeys, I have a Friends & Family railcard paid for by my Tesco vouchers every year. This saves me 30% when Little Miss Diva is travelling with me and, as we make good use of it, it pays for itself. For journeys further afield than Bristol, I also try and book train tickets 13 weeks in advance and I always compare prices with Megabus, National Express and Sn-ap – a new premier league coach service that has launched in Bristol offering travel for pocket money prices and your first trip is free!.
Sometimes only a taxi will do! I found myself in this situation the other day when I had to do a big shop at Asda in Bedminster and I’d left it way too late to book an online delivery slot. I ended up calling Bristol based AA Taxis who were competitive when it came to price. It helped that the driver was friendly too, offering to help with my bags, which after quite a stressful day made all the difference!
