About Me
Welcome to my website. My name is Jackie Annett and I’ve lived in this wonderful city for many years. I’m a single mum to fourteen-year-old Little Miss Diva and for the last 20 years I’ve been working as a journalist, magazine editor and blogger.
Saving money hasn’t always come naturally to me – in fact most bloggers who write about saving money have been in debt themselves. In my late 20s, my ex-husband and I were in £16,000 worth of debt. We worked hard, partied hard and shopped hard! I’ve always loved a bargain, but I had more ‘bargain’ outfits than one young woman could possibly need. I continually went over my overdraft and got into trouble with the banks and credit card companies as a result.
It was finding out that I was pregnant that proved to be my wake up call. I remember thinking “how the hell am I going to live off £100 a week maternity pay?” as I was used to earning and spending so much more. But we tightened our belts, stopped going out and we managed OK. When I started earning decent money again, I put all my wages away. We lived off a strict budget and I came up with a plan for dealing with our debts. After a couple of years, we’d paid it all off. It was a fantastic feeling!
I made a promise to myself that I would never get into debt again and I’ve stuck to it. Paying less for everything has enabled me to go from drowning in debt to owning my own house — despite being a single parent and without any financial help from my family. I really enjoy helping others save money so Broke in Bristol (& beyond) is my way of sharing local offers and updates on all the fabulous deals, discounts and days out taking place in Bristol. Broke in Bristol has been featured in The Mirror, Metro, Sun, Bristol Post, Radio Bristol and Times Radio. Come and join me on my money-saving journey:
