It’s Thursday which can only mean one thing – it’s time for our pick of free and cheap things to do in Bristol! Every week, we’ll be letting you know about all the free and cheap events going on, whether you’re young, free and single or looking for some family-friendly fun.

It’s that time of year again when Bristol’s skyline is filled with bright and beautiful balloons and this Thursday I’ll be taking Mr Spendthrift and Little Miss Diva to Perrett’s Park for a posh picnic from M&S. I love the balloon fiesta but I’m not so keen on the crowds so I prefer to spend the money I would have spent on parking, fast food and rides on nice food and wine and relax in our local park instead. Other great places to watch the fiesta for free are Clifton Downs, Bedminster Down, Victoria Park, Brandon Hill or Leigh Woods. There’s also a Rio Carnival after-party for over 18s on Saturday night at 78 Bristol which is on Queens Road in BS8 with tickets starting from £2.71 including booking fee.

This Saturday 13 August the Keynsham Fake Festival returns and it’s the place to rock out to tribute bands playing songs from The Killers, The Rolling Stones and the Arctic Monkeys. You can pick up a family ticket which admits two adults and two children for £53 or if your children are nine or under they get in free. Or for a free day out, head on over to Chippenham for a free craft fayre, which will be held at the Neeld Community and Arts Centre. In BS3 there’s a Hardcore Family Funday at Dean Lane Skatepark or there’s Circus Fun at The Somer Centre in Midsomer Norton for children with additional needs and disabilities as well as their siblings and friends.

If you’re in Portishead this Sunday, then why not pop along to the marina where Newfoundland Dog Water Rescue will be holding an event to raise money to support HorseWorld Trust. The event is free and all donations will go towards supporting the charity. On Sunday evening you can hear some spooky stories at Arnos Vale Cemetery from 6.30-8pm and a £10 family ticket covers entry for up to two adults and three children. But be aware that this event may be a bit too spooky for children under six!

On Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the school holidays the Café des Amis in Easton is hosting cheap kids activities from pottery to cooking and cycle coaching. Each session lasts a couple of hours and costs £6.50 which includes light refreshments. Times of events vary, so keep an eye on their Facebook page for more details.
