Welcome back to Broke in Bristol’s weekend blog – the blog that helps you socialise (with or without the kids) on a shoestring. Every week, we’ll be letting you know about all the free and cheap events going on, whether you’re young, free and single or looking for some family-friendly fun.
For the youngsters, tonight there’s a free indie and alternative club night at the Thekla (21 July) and 2 for 1 drinks all night. The Victoria Park Pub’s Beer & Cider Festival also starts today, which means I won’t have to walk far this weekend! As well as plenty of beer and cider, there’ll also be live music throughout the weekend. On Friday, The Summertides will be playing from 9pm and Sunday sees the return of singer/songwriter Alex Taylor from 4pm.
On Saturday, I’m going to drag myself away from the Victoria Park Pub for a bit and pop on down to Bedminster’s Urban Arts Festival – Upfest. This Is Europe’s largest Street Art and Graffiti Festival and it takes over North St for three days from 23-25 July. Over 300 artists will paint 28 venues across Bedminster and Southville and there will be an affordable art sale, music stages, art workshops, food stalls and a bar!
Udder side of town
If Gloucester Road is nearer your neck of the woods then head on down there this Saturday 23 July as the streets will be filled with music, food and family fun. This is a free family-friendly festival with crazy science shows and a bouncy castle for the kids, live music from J’Adele and two soulful house sets from Purpura Music. Many local businesses will be selling their produce so it could be a chance to pick up a discount and support local!
If you’re out in town this Friday and Saturday night, check out the SKINT Theatre Festival. This is a brand new nightlife and live performance event, combining affordable theatre with a vibrant pop-up bar at The Island. Located in the police cells beneath Bristol arts venue The Island, this two-day festival will showcase break-out local artists who will perform short and affordable pieces throughout the two nights. There’s a bar, an open-air festival courtyard, interactive installations and food, as well as live music following the late-night shows. It’s free entry both nights (22 & 23 July) to the festival bar and courtyard, and just £3 to see any performance.
Make Sunday Special is back this week and St Stephen St will be turned into a beach for the day on 24 July! There will also be live music and DJs, a children’s play garden, street food and a bar!
