Welcome back to Broke in Bristol’s weekend blog – the blog that helps you socialise (with or without the kids) on a shoestring. Every week, we’ll be letting you know about all the free and cheap events going on, whether you’re young, free and single or looking for some family-friendly fun.
We’ve another fun-packed weekend in Bristol to look forward to and St Nicks Night Market will be going all Caribbean this Friday 1 July – on the weekend that would usually be St Pauls Carnival. This promises to be more than just its usual monthly night market with It’s a Bristol Ting rocking up with its sound system and kicking off a reggae street party to remember.
There may be no St Paul’s Carnival this weekend but Grass Roots Pt 2 could be the next best thing! It’s hosted by the guys who usually run the carnival and it takes place outside the Malcolm X Centre from 12 ‘til 8 and inside from 10 ‘til 4am on Saturday 2 July. It’s free, although organisers will be asking for donations on the door.
Bristol Pride also starts this week (although the parade is not until 9 July). There’s loads going on, just check out their website for details. If that doesn’t float your boat, Mr Wolfs is playing host to two live bands this Saturday night or there’s a free cider festival taking place in Weston-super-Mare.
Take the kids
Wimbledon is now in full swing and if the sun makes an appearance then why not head on down to Millennium Square? The Men’s and Ladies’ Singles 3rd Round will be played on the big screen this Friday 1 and Saturday 2 July with the quarter and semi-finals shown on the big screens throughout the week. The At-Bristol café is open for food and drink, but I usually take a picnic (unless Mr Spendthrift is paying!)
I’m not sure Little Miss Diva will sit still for long enough to enjoy the tennis, so I’ll be taking her to the M Shed for its two-day festival of fun, to celebrate everything we love about children’s television past and present. Little Miss Diva and I are hooked on old re-runs of The Sooty Show and at the M Shed this weekend you’ll be able to introduce the whole family to programmes you remember from your childhood. There’s also the chance to take part in Jackanory story sessions on the double decker bus.
Just up the road in Bedminster, Windmill Hill City Farm will be running free theatre performances. As part of its 40th Birthday celebrations, it’s joined up with Show of Strength Theatre Company to produce live performances every 20 minutes. Written by local writers and performed by professional actors, the five minute monologues, written from the point of view of the animals, will be performed on site in the farmyard on Saturday and Sunday.
