It’s nearly the weekend – which can only mean one thing – it’s time for our pick of free and cheap things to do in Bristol! And if you ask me – there is only one thing better than a festival – and that’s a festival right on your doorstep!
This Saturday I’ll be checking out the Victoria Park festival just down the road from me in BS3. This year, it’s being hosted by The Windmill as part of the pub’s 10th birthday celebrations and organisers are planning a party in the park to remember. With loads of family-friendly activities, a beer tent and live music, there should be enough to keep everyone happy. If you’re feeling brave, you can still sign up to a 5k fun run that’s also taking place as part of the celebrations. I think I’ll give that one a miss and head straight to the beer tent!
In town, there is loads of stuff going on this Saturday with Lou Lou’s Vintage Fair returning to The Passenger Shed by Temple Meads Station. If you love vintage then this is the place to bag a bargain and it’s only £3 to get in and under 12s are free. Even if you don’t spot a bargain, there will be plenty to keep the whole family entertained with a local harmony band, a pop up hair and beauty salon and a vintage tea party.
Make Sunday Special takes over Bristol’s Old City this Sunday (18 Sept) and it’s the last event of the summer – so make the most of it! Urban radio station, Ujima Radio, will be broadcasting live and there will be a spoken word event from The Festival of Ideas. Also check out the Independent Label Market at St Nicks which is taking place at the same time.
This weekend there is also a free open decks event for over 18s at The Plough Inn, Easton, a free drop in printing workshop for all the family at the Arnolfini, an event for petrolheads at Washingpool Farm in BS35 and a Cheeki Monkeys Market in Long Ashton.
Or, if you fancy escaping Bristol altogether, why not take a cheap train ride to Cardiff and enjoy the Welsh capital’s tribute to Roald Dahl who was born in Cardiff? The city will be transformed into something quite unusual and you should look out for unexpected happenings on the streets and buildings – as well as people walking around in their PJs heading to the Pajama in the Park picnic!
